Year 1 2019 - 2020

Welcome to Year 1 smiley

We have had a fabulous half term in Year One.  The children have adapted to their new environment and now know the routines and expectations in the Year One classroom.  They have loved the 'Carousel' in our classroom - giving everyone the opportunitiy to complete Literacy and Maths activities daily with an adult, as well as having play via continuous provision areas around the classroom.

This half term in the busy run up to Christmas we will be preparing children to develop their independent learning skills.  Children will be encouraged to perserve when things get tricky, solve problems with the help of their friends and create a positive mindset to overcome challenges.

This year St Matthew's focus is to promote Reading throughout our school.  Children in Year One will be 'Free Readers' every morning - choosing their own book of interest to them, sharing their likes/dislikes with their peers as well as giving a verbal book review to the class.  We are keen for our children to develop a love of books and we will be treated  to some special storytimes from special mystery guests during the year.

Home Learning

The link between school and home is crucial to help our children succeed and work at their full potential.  Please support them with the weekly homework tasks.  Little and often can really help build confidence and develop a positive attitude to learning.

Learning should be fun and enjoyable and can happen in lots of different multisensory ways...build keywords using lego; act out a story using soft toys; hunt for hidden letters at the park....anything is possible, get creative!

Useful websites for additonal opportunities at home:

Children love to use ICT and aren't always aware they are learning when using a tablet or phone.  We have compiled a list of a few favourite websites we enjoy using in Year One that your child may find engaging at home.

English: children continue to practise their phonics skills daily as part of our Read, Write Inc.  These are really useful to give them a little bit of extra practise in a fun and engaging way.....

Maths:  Children are learning to know their number bonds up to 10 inside out!  Once they are secure with this then they can apply this knowledge to bigger numbers.
